Curbless shower remodel in Mesa, AZ

The Challenge & Reason For the Remodel:

Our client was struggling with their existing large garden tub/shower combo. Getting in and out was difficult, and they wanted to transform the space into a wheelchair-accessible, ADA-compliant shower. This meant creating a no-barrier entry (curbless shower), installing grab bars, and expanding the shower area for added comfort and ease of use. The picture to the left shows the accessibility of the grab bars, fixtures, and shower niche.

Bathroom Remodeling Project Overview

  • Location: Mesa, AZ

  • Budget: $18,500

  • Completion Time: 11 days

  • Goal: Achieve a new curbless shower remodel

Design Concept:

The first step for this curbless shower remodel was to tailor the shower's features to the homeowner's specific needs, ensuring maximum comfort and functionality. In the design we included custom-placed grab bars at the locations and heights preferred by the homeowner. The shower head was custom-fitted to the homeowner’s preferred height. The valve and adjustable handheld wand were positioned for easy reach whether the user was sitting or standing. The client selected chrome fixtures, which, while not the most trendy, harmonized beautifully with the tile, giving the bathroom a modern, spa-like feel. We also placed the niche at an accessible height for both standing and seated users.

For the tile, we chose a 24”x 48” polished porcelain tile for its easy maintenance and minimal grout lines, complemented by a hexagon marble mosaic on the floor. These cream-colored tiles perfectly matched the home’s existing aesthetic and ensured the new and existing elements blended seamlessly.

THE PROCESS - Curbless Shower Remodeling in Mesa, AZ

1) Preparation Before Demolition and Dust:

The home had a unique layout with carpet extending from the entrance to the master bedroom. We covered the carpet, master bedroom flooring, and the furniture inside of the master bedroom that connected to the bathroom. Our goal was to maintain cleanliness by following our standard dust control procedures and reduce post-construction cleanup!

2) Demolition/Removal:

We carefully removed the existing garden tub, bench, and cultured marble walls without damaging the surrounding areas or any plumbing/electrical components behind the walls. All trash was hauled away in our dump trailer and safely disposed of.

3)Shower Remodel/Rebuild Start:

We removed and disposed of the corroded copper pipes in the shower area. The concrete around the drain was broken, and our plumber dug down more than 24” to find the P-trap, converting the 1 ½ ABS drain to a 2” ABS drain to meet stand-up shower plumbing codes. We installed the Delta Universal shower valve with an integrated diverter and raised the shower head to 84 inches, allowing for better clearance. All new plumbing lines were inspected and pressure-tested before we moved on to the next shower remodeling step.

For the new curbless shower floor, we created a slope of just above 1/4 of an inch per square foot, ensuring proper water drainage. We installed the Denshield wallboard with a 100% waterproof sealant at the seams, used Schluter membrane for shower pan waterproofing, and reinforced the walls with Mapei’s Aqua Defense. After creating a temporary shower curb, we filled the shower pan with water and leak-tested it overnight. The results showed a 100% leak-free shower, ready for tiling.

The 24” x 48” porcelain tile was laid in a horizontal stacked pattern with a 3” tile baseboard along the bottom to avoid a small cut at the ceiling joint. We used the same tile for the niche backdrop, ensuring the tile vein continued seamlessly through the back of the niche. A template for the shower pan tile was created, pre-cut, and installed, adhering to industry-standard techniques. We inspected the detail work multiple times to ensure a high-quality final product.

4) Quality Inspections: Our final inspections provided the homeowner with peace of mind, knowing they received a top-of-the-line shower remodel. The new design gave their bathroom a beautiful, functional, and modern look, significantly improving their daily life.

7) Happy Customer Testimonial:

Summarized Video Testimonial:

“It was great working with your company, you were the only company that was willing to give me general pricing information from the first call. You gave us a clear plan for the remodel and the process went by quicker than I expected. I wouldnt even have imagined the quality of the work that you completed to be as beautiful as it is. Your crew was very hardworking, it was very impressive, from the second they came, they were busy doing stuff constantly, it was really a great crew with beautiful work. I liked that you were one of the main people who came by every day and interacted and kept a close eye on your crews, although I think your guys would have done a great job without anybody checking in on them. I would highly recommend you, the communication was great and you were always here to answer any questions I had. The price was 100% worth it for what I got!”
